There are lots of things you can do to achieve your goals. The trick is figuring out what you need to put in place so that you get what you are wanting in life.
In fact, you need to make a plan when it comes to trying to achieve a goal. Having a goal may be the first step.
The problem is that some people are really great at being able to achieve their goals but then there are other people that don’t seem to be able to achieve them at all!
The main reason that people fail at reaching their goals is that fail to have a specific goal. Goals need to be focused and clear.
There also has to be a plan of action; the steps necessary in order to reach your goal.
Here is a list of the steps to take that can help you reach your goal.
Have a Clear, Specific Goal
The first thing in working on a goal is to make sure that not only is it clear, but it is also specific. It also needs to be attainable.
You may want to consider challenging yourself a bit. You may want to set a goal that is a bit out of your comfort zone, but that it is still possible to attain.
For instance, you have a goal to lose weight, you need to decide on the amount you want to lose.
Let’s say you decide that you want to lose 30 pounds. In order to have a workable goal, you need to decide on when you want to reach the goal.
It needs to be a reasonable amount of time. Trying to lose 30 pounds in a month is setting yourself up to fail.
Having the following goal is unreasonable: “I will lose 30 pounds in a month”. However, a reasonable goal that is more doable would be the following: “I will lose 30 pounds in 15 to 20 weeks”.
The doable goal is based on good health recommendations of an average weight loss of two pounds a week. Having a timeline of 15 to 20 weeks also gives you a little cushion.
One thing to remember is to write a goal using “I will” rather than “I want”. I will makes the goal something you will accomplish whereas I want is more of a wish. The words you use can make the difference.
Set Actionable Tasks for the Goal
When writing a goal it is important that you make sure the goal answers the “why” and “how” along with the “what” for your goal.
If you want to use the example of losing 30 pounds, you will need to look at why you want to do this, how long it is going to take, and what you need to do (the plan of action) in order to reach the goal.
The good news is that today you have all sorts of information available online. By doing some research you can decide what you need to do to reach the goal.
You will need to plan your meals along with any exercise you will need to do to lose 30 pounds.
When you do some research on what you need to do, you will be able to set up a plan of action.
This will give you a clear path to success in reaching the goal. Here are some action steps you could use:
- I am going to plan the meals and snacks and decide how many calories you will use up for the day.
- I will walk at least twenty minutes a day.
- I will weigh myself once a week and record the loss.
- I am going to give myself a reward for each five-pound loss.
Once you have a plan of action that is achievable, you will be more motivated to actually work towards reaching the goal so you can improve your life.
There are still a few more steps to consider that will help you reach the goal.
Make Sure to Schedule Everything
You can not leave anything at all to chance if you want to achieve your goals. You will need to schedule all the steps you have to take to reach your goal. Plan to add the steps into a calendar.
Just writing out a list of all the things you want to do, is not going to be enough. You need to actually schedule everything. This way you won’t miss a step and you will make sure you do the steps each day.
Just like an appointment that you would add to your calendar for a doctor’s appointment, add when you will take your exercise to the calendar.
That way you are more likely to actually do the walk.
Also, schedule your meals and any prep time that the meal is going to require. Being realistic about the time each step is going to take will help you to stay on track.
Taking Action!
You will never reach your goal if you don’t take action every single day! When you get up in the morning, check your calendar and then follow the plan you have made.
When you complete all the tasks you set for yourself each day, you will reach your goal. You just have to do them each and every day until then.
Daily action is what will get you there! Don’t stop until you reach your goal.
You may need to make adjustments as you go along. Perhaps you decided that you will do your exercise in the afternoon but you find that doing it first thing in the morning is a better idea.
Repeat, Repeat Until You Reach Your Goal!
You are going to repeat the steps and tasks each day. When you have a goal that is specific and clear with the steps you need to achieve the goal, you will do more than what most people do, you will be successful.
The secret to reaching a goal is you just need to take one step at a time. When you focus on what you need to do each day and do it, you will soon find yourself having reached the goal.
