It is important to understand that experience is a great teacher but adversity is the accomplished teacher. While it is true that nobody wants to have to deal with challenges, the upside is that overcoming adversity builds confidence and resilience.
We Can’t Avoid Tough Times
Although you may wish that we don’t have to deal with adversity, it is inevitable. We can’t find a magic solution to avoid challenges and upsets.
It is not realistic to believe that you won’t encounter a challenge throughout your lifetime.
What you should be doing is trusting that you won’t have to experience challenges that will break you and make it impossible to get over the problem.
There are terrible situations that can arise that can shake a person to the core.
If you are able to overcome those situations with grace, you can have a beautiful and fulfilling life.
Adversity isn’t avoidable. But overcoming adversity builds strength and character.
We All Have Dreams We Want to Achieve
We often look at people who are famous or celebrities and think they live a charmed life. This is not true. They also have adversity to deal with.
In fact, Arsenal and French national team football player Thierry Henry had a terrible year in 2006.
He found himself in the unfortunate situation where he had lost not only the World Cup final but the UEFA Champion League final as well.
If you are a football fan you know that these are very important trophies. Every footballer dreams of winning these trophies.
They can have to deal with a lot of mocking after retirement if they don’t win these trophies during their playing years.
All is not lost however as Thierry Henry would win the UEFA Champion League with Barcelona in 2009.
It is important to remember that no matter who we are, we all have dreams and aspirations.
It would not be unusual if we didn’t get frustrated when we aren’t able to achieve those dreams.
If you have goals you want to achieve, you are going to have adversity. So overcoming adversity means we can deal with the inevitable.
Enjoy the People and Things You Care About
If you have people in your life, it is going to be unavoidable to not have any challenges.
It is important to have friends and family that we care about. Unfortunately, though, people can get sick, get hurt in an accident, and can die.
These types of situations are unavoidable. They make for some pretty dark days in our lives.
For anyone who has experienced the loss of a loved one, it is tough to move on with your life.
These situations are part of our lives and there isn’t anything we can do to avoid them happening.
More importantly, there is nothing we can do to prepare ourselves for this pain.
All we can do is care about the people we love while they are in our lives.
We All Have Emotions
As human beings we all have emotions. Our emotions are some of the most beautiful elements of being alive.
Emotions are the reason why we feel loved when people celebrate our birthdays or other significant events in our lives.
Our emotions are how we feel connected and loved by the people in our lives.
But, our feelings are also responsible for unpleasant situations such as depression, anxiety, and pain.
As people, we can feel sad over the breakup of a relationship or the loss of a job, or even because something we wanted didn’t work out.
Our emotions are responsible for feeling disappointments and frustrations.
You are going to have many reasons for these types of feelings as long as you are alive.
Therefore, adversity is not avoidable. We just have to find ways of overcoming adversity.
Adversity Will Teach Us Lessons
In the words of Booker T. Washington:
It is important to heed these wise words. Washington knows a bit about adversity having been the voice of former slaves and their descendants. They were able to weather a lot of oppression.
You might not want to agree, but adversity is very much needed. Adversity can lead us to success since we will be learning much along the way.
One way to get through the bad times is to remind yourself of all the joy you have in your life. And as well, to realize that this too shall pass.
According to Tony Robbins,
There is no need to curse your luck when you feel like the whole world is crashing down around you. Time to take a different look!
If you are able to see problems and challenges as an opportunity you will be able to build more resilience.
There are ways of overcoming adversity and that is by going through the tough times and coming out the other side stronger.
You just might find out that you are stronger than you thought you were.
By trying to avoid challenges you are only missing out on opportunities to learn how to take on future challenges.
Here are some reasons why you might not want to run away from challenges.
You Will Not Be Able To Reach Your Goals
You can’t reach a goal without going through some challenges. Sometimes those challenges will be simple to get over and other times they will be more difficult.
If you are going to accomplish your goals you will need to take on challenges.
It isn’t very surprising that Booker T. Washington said that success should be measured by how many obstacles there are to overcome.
We can’t possibly be successful without having to solve a few problems. A person who is not willing to succeed in spite of the odds should forget about being successful in life.
You, Will, Need to be Vulnerable
You probably don’t want to be treated like you are weak.
However, you can set yourself up to be vulnerable to changes without taking the easy way through.
When you pick your plan, you will need to hold the course.
If not, you won’t be able to get through issues that interfere with your plans.
You’ll Be Better Equipped to Cope With Stress
Whether we like it or not, stress is pretty much an everyday situation. In order to not let stress get in the way of your success, you will need to have coping mechanisms in place.
If you are familiar with feeling stressed in any given situation, you will be able to help yourself face it.
When a new situation arises, you might not have any confidence at first. This unfortunately can make you prone to making mistakes.
So, find a way to cope with stress when a challenge shows up.
