You will need to be specific here. Instead of “I want to weigh less” state that “I have lost 30 pounds”. Or instead of “I want to be debt-free”, write that “I have reduced my debt by $5,000”.

It is important to make it specific and write it as if you already have reached the goal.

It is important here to list everything you can think of about who your ideal self is, what that looks like.

On the other side of the paper, write My Real Self. Again, without judgment, describe who you believe you are today.

What you do for a job, where you live, things that motivate you, and also describe who you are physically as well as emotionally.

Once you have completed both sides of the paper take a pen or highlighter and draw a line between any of the items you think are similar to one another.

This will give you an indication of how far your real self is from your ideal self. Or maybe, how similar they are to each other.

This will also give you an indication of what other goals you could work towards.

Do you need to learn a new skill to advance at work, do you still have some weight you want to get rid of or is there a relationship that needs work?

When you have goals you can plot the direction you want to take as a way to improve your life.

When you start accomplishing goals, no matter how big or how small, you will find you are more satisfied with life and your stress level is reduced.

Breaking the Stress Cycle by Planning for the Future

Reducing stressTake another piece of paper and write out a timeline looking back over your life. You can make a timeline of your personal life or even your career.

Take a look at what is the most pressing part of your life when it comes to stress.

If you want to get very specific about doing this timeline, get some poster board or a large piece of paper and add photos that reflect certain events in your life.

This is also an opportunity to take a look at your strengths and abilities that you may have forgotten when it comes to experiences in the past.

You will want to have a second poster board so that you can create a future timeline. This is where you can plan for the life you really want.

Make lines for one to five years on the poster board and then for each of the next five years as far into the future as you want to go.

This is your opportunity to dream. Nothing should be ruled out. If money or time was not an obstacle, what kind of life would you want to have?

It is a good idea to hang both poster boards side by side on a wall and spend some time over the next week or so paying attention to what you have written.

As you take time to look over the ideas for the future, you may find that you focus on one or two areas of your life that you want to work on.

This is possibly your subconscious mind leading you to where you should be going with your future.

You might want to consider saving these timelines and marking off the changes as they happen.

You never know what can happen over time. As long as you keep your focus on being your best self and striving for your goals, you just might find you end up in a place you never thought was possible.

And as a result, you have managed in breaking the stress cycle and are a happier version of yourself!
